Learn Quran: Suart Al-Fatihah

Asmaa Akl

31 Dec 2019

Surat Al-Fatihah’s name means the opener, for it is the opening chapter of the Quran and it opens the link between the believer and Allah. The word Al-Fatihah الفاتحة came from the root word فتح which means to open.

Al Fatiha is usually the first chapter a child or a convert learns when they start to learn Quran. This is an indication of the importance of this chapter or Surah. It is one of the most important chapters of the Quran. It is the greatest surah in the Quran, for the prophet Muhammad PBUH said:

As narrated by the companion of the prophet (ﷺ), Aby Saeed Rafia Ibn Al Muala, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him, "Shall I teach you the greatest Surah in the Qur'an before you leave the mosque?" Then he (ﷺ), took me by the hand, and when we were about to step out, I reminded him of his promise to teach me the greatest Surah in the Qur'an. He (ﷺ) said, "It is 'Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil 'Alamin (i.e., Surat Al-Fatihah) which is As-Sab' Al-Mathani (i.e., the seven oft- repeated Ayat) and the Great Quran which is given to me."

Al Fatihah is an obligatory inclusion in Islamic prayers

Every Muslim must start their prayer with this Surah for each Raka’a, for without it a prayer is incomplete and deficient. It is recited at least 17 times during the five obligatory Islamic prayers.
